Coffee Filter Wreath 12/12/2010
One of my favorite things about moving back to the US is being able to watch Martha Stewart on the Hallmark channel, especially this time of year. I love seeing all the wonderful holiday crafts and displays. The only problem is I am having trouble finding time to fit in watching the show. Anyone else have that problem too? Fortunately, one day last week I did catch a segment where Martha made a beautiful coffee filter wreath, and as if by magic I somehow managed to focus in on how it was made even with the chaos going on around me. I was really intrigued because I had a big bag of coffee filters that were not being used. Little did I know before I bought our coffee maker, it doesn’t use paper filters :-/ Here is how I made Martha Stewart’s Coffee Filter Wreath. First I cut out the center of a paper plate. The lip works well to hold the glue. Next I folded a coffee filter in half then folded the sides in slightly to make a smaller area at the bottom of the filter to glue. Using a hot glue gun I drew a line of glue and pressed the folded coffee filter in the glue. I continued doing that until I got almost all the way around the circle when I remembered to punch 2 holes and tie a ribbon through them to hang the wreath. Continue with the coffee filters until you have gone all the way around the circle. Next I glued coffee filters around the circle on the inside facing the opposite direction, pointing inward. After the inside filter is glued in place you push it upward to make a more full wreath. Continue until you have filled the inside of the circle. When you are done gluing the coffee filters into place this is what the wreath looks like. Lastly, to complete the look, tie on a bow. I started with a big red bow. Then I decided to trade it up for a smaller maroon bow. Voila! A beautiful coffee filter wreath made in very little time using things I already had around the house. Martha also kicked hers up a notch with some glitter and glue if you want to take it to the next level. I hit my time limit but was happy with the result. What is your opinion, which bow do you like better on the wreath? 4 Comments Reuse: Greetings Cards 12/06/2010
As a family of 4 we create more waste than I’d like to admit. It is important for us to reduce waste as often as we can and set a good example for our children. Scaling back on how much we buy is not only good for our wallet; it is good for the environment. Although we have easy access to email, and a great variety of e-cards, there is still something truly special about receiving a card in the mail. Something you can touch, hold onto, and display. Kids love receiving mail too! For that reason when I am feeling crafty I reuse cherished greeting cards. Many times we hold onto cards we receive because they are so special to us. They sit in a box, collect dust, and are not enjoyed very often. In an effort to live more simply my family has significantly cut down on the number of cards we keep. We still save some in a memory box but no longer keep all the cards we receive from loved ones. Instead we reuse them, and let their beauty and special sayings bring joy to others, all while being a little more kind to the environment. Often we will reuse cards with beautiful patterns and lovely sentiments, giving them new life by turning them into new cards with a personal home-made touch. Simply cut and glue or tape. It is really very easy and something kids can help do. With the holidays coming considered reusing some of the gorgeous cards you receive and further pass along the joy. This is probably not a good last minute project when you are swept away in the holiday rush, but with a little planning you may be able to make last year’s cards into beautiful new cards for this year. Give the environment a kiss when you do, after all we are only borrowing our planet from future generations. Reusing holiday cards is one of my favorite things to do. They are incredibly beautiful and I hate throwing them out, so stay tuned for more ideas on how to give greeting cards a new life. Do you have any ideas for reusing cards? I’d love to hear your fabulous thoughts! Homemade Cards 03/24/2010
The next time you need a card for a special event, consider making one of your own. If your kids are old enough and enjoy making crafts or doing art work, a fun project is having them make the cards for your friends and loved ones. These cards were made by a very special 4 year old friend. One for Big Brother And one for Little Sister I adore the love that goes into a homemade card. It gives the cards that extra special touch. Another amazing friend of mine makes her own cards. It can relieve stress, and is a wonderful creative outlet. What’s better than putting your creativity to work, and making little pieces of art for your friends and family to cherish? Look at the details on these cards. I just love that! Big Brother’s Little Sister’s When a card is made especially for you by someone you care about, it holds a special place in your heart! Does art work relieve stress for you? A Couple of Random Ideas ♥ 02/02/2010
I thought today I would share with you a couple of ideas I have seen recently and liked. On Martha Stewarts Organizing Tip of the Day 2 weeks ago one idea stood out to me. A carryall apron. Not for cooking but for cleaning. There are those days you go all out cleaning. For many of us it happens when someone one is coming over J, while the rest of the time it is regular maintenance. However, when you are doing a big clean a great way to lug all the cleaning supplies: rags, gloves, duster, spray bottle or whatever else you may be using, is to use an apron with big pockets and put everything you need in there. That way you have easy access and it goes with you from room to room. There are 2 other reasons I liked this idea. One being that you know exactly where the cleaning supplies you are using are. Parents out there know how quickly a toddler can go for that dangerous bottle of cleaning supplies while you are looking down cleaning something. This way it is in your apron so you don’t have to worry. Using a bucket to carry everything means you have to set it down somewhere out of reach of the kids. That is not always easy or as convenient. The other reason I like this idea is because it protects your clothes from getting sprayed with the chemicals. You may be saying well lots of the time when I am cleaning I don’t wear good cloths. Even still, do you really want chemicals all over your cloths to breathe in and rub off on your kids when you are done? The second idea for today I saw on the Living On A Dime Blog. It really appealed to me because I am a big tea drinker. This idea is for Valentine’s Day♥ It costs almost nothing, is super easy to do, and will add a little touch of love to a relaxing cup of tea for someone you love. Cut out a heart and glue it to the end of a tea bag string. You can even write a loving word on the heart to take it a step further. Along these lines a gift idea for your tea loving loved one is to fill a mug full of tea bags with hearts. You could use a mug you already own, or maybe be on the lookout for a heart or love themed mug. Although it is a more expensive option Starbucks has a celebration mug I love that you can write your own message on. Filling that with words of love, and heart adorned tea bags would be another nice option. If Valentine’s Day isn’t your cup of tea (no pun intended ;-), you could use the heart adorned tea bag any day of the year for a nice simple touch of love. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Do you have any traditions that you do for your loved ones, like heart shaped pancakes or lipstick messages? Holiday Crafts For Kids Martha Style 12/21/2009
Christmas Countdown: 4 More Sleeps! If you are blessed with some more time with your kids over the holidays and are looking for some fun crafts to do together, consider creating one or more of my favorite ideas from Martha Stewart Holiday Crafts For Kids Recycled Toy Ornaments Recycle small old toys by hanging them on your tree for ornaments. Try hanging those little cars, fire trucks, and dolls on the tree. If you happen to have a children’s tree these will make great kid friendly ornaments. Or use these ornaments to fill the lower branches of your Christmas tree where kids can reach. Ribbon Chains Just like making paper chains, make ribbon chains with left over pieces of ribbon, or recycled pieces from your packages. Christmas Card Garland Cut circles from your recycled Christmas cards or those free ones many of us get in the mail. Attach the circle to a thick piece of string using a sticker on the back side. To make it extra sturdy apply glue. This is another great kid friendly decoration. You can hang this garland on your tree, or may want to consider hanging it above your child’s window for a home-made room decoration they can be proud of. Cookie Wreath Martha Stewart makes this wreath using Gingerbread-Men. Follow the link to see her rendition of a Gingerbread-Man Wreath and recipe. This wreath would work well with sugar cookies as well. After cutting out the cookies and baking the wreath you can let your kids decorate it further with icing, candy, or sprinkles. To make the wreath: Arrange cookie cut-outs around a circle overlapping each one slightly. Brush the overlapped section with a wet pastry brush and press the cookies together. Freeze the cookie wreath until it is firm. Martha suggests about 15 minutes. Half way through baking rotate the wreath. Let it cool completely before hanging. Hang the wreath away from sources of heat and moisture. Most of all have fun creating with your little ones! What are your favorite holiday craft ideas for kids? Bring The Outdoors In 12/18/2009
While watching An Old-Fashion Christmas, a Reader’s Digest movie my Grandmother gave me, I was inspired. This is a great background video that goes from one Christmas carol to another. One segment of the video is made to look like it takes place a long time ago. A time when Christmas decor did not involve so much plastic and “fake” decorations. I for one have my share of fake decorations. One of my favorites is a string of little red plastic balls made to look like cranberries. However, it didn’t always used to be this way. Once upon a time most decorations were made from nature. I would like to start bringing this back in our home. You can make beautiful decorations for your tree made of food, cookie ornaments, cranberries and popcorn strings to name a few. Decorate your home with beautiful plants. If you purchase a real tree save the trimming to put in vases to decorate your table, or go outside and clip some. Instead of candles and air fresheners made to smell like the scents of Christmas, which I admit can smell so nice, it would be great to breath in the real scent of pine and cinnamon. Fill bowls with real cranberries, nuts, and cinnamon sticks to give your home a beautiful scent. Like the smell of coffee, add coffee beans. This also would work great to give your bathrooms a fresh scent without the use of so many chemicals. Use the Holiday Season as a great opportunity to dig out old vases and bowls you rarely use and fill with nature’s precious gifts. Fill baskets with pinecones, and let your kids make crafts with them. If your outdoor treasures don’t add enough sparkle to your holiday decor a little addition of glitter and glue can go a long way. Not only is this way of decorating better for the environment, it truly brings an old-fashion Christmas back into your home. The movie inspired me to move back to more traditional ways of decorating, and I hope this post inspires you! Do you have any natural decorating techniques you would like to share? More Christmas Reusing Ideas 12/17/2009
Another Reusing Christmas Cards Idea At the end of the season save your Christmas cards and ribbons and cut them into circles, squares, rectangles, or any other shape you fancy depending on what works best for the design on the particular card you are using. Use the cut outs to make gift tags for next Christmas. Punch a whole and attach ribbon to tie to bags and gifts. Pack the tags away with your decorations so you will find them next year. Try this idea throughout the year. You can use old birthday cards to make tags for birthday presents. Reuse Wrapping Paper – idea from WholeLiving.com After you open your gifts shred the wrapping paper, and use it for packaging future gifts. Shredded holiday paper looks festive in your gift presentation. The shredded wrapping paper also works great for storing fragile objects such as ornaments. Surround the object with the shredded paper for extra protection. Reuse Fruit Peels – idea from Living on a Dime After peeling your oranges save the peels. Cut the peels with small cookie cutters such as stars and use them as accents in a fruit platter. This idea would probably work great with all citrus fruits whose peels hold up well and could give you a variety of colors. Along those lines, I thought why not do the same thing to lemon and lime peels to add festive shapes to your holiday drinks. Chocolate Drizzle – idea from Living on a Dime To add a special touch of chocolate drizzle to your desserts or holiday foods put some chocolate chips into a bag and seal. Put bag into hot water and smash every now and then until the chocolate is smooth without chunks. Cut the tip of the bag and drizzle. I may use this idea to let my young kids do some last minute cookie decorating for Santa on Christmas Eve. We have already made chocolate chip cookies in our freezer. To make Santa’s cookies extra special from the kids that night make a small bag of chocolate chip drizzle. Let the kids put chocolate drizzle onto the cookies, then top with sprinkles. The sprinkles should stick to the chocolate as it hardens. That way the children feel like they have made Santa’s cookies with a special touch from them. And maybe the reindeer might like a little bit of drizzle on their carrots too! HAPPY HOLIDAYS! Reuse your Holiday Cards 12/11/2009
Every year when I am taking down the holiday decorations I always look at the beautiful holiday cards I have received and think to myself I wish there was something I could do with them. So many of them are meaningful and beautiful, getting rid of them can seem like a waste. This year instead of throwing out your cards pick your favorites and reuse them! Card Bookmarks Cut bookmarks out of the cards. I found cutting the front of the card into a 2 inch strip works well. For an extra touch at the top of the bookmark punch a hole and tie with a ribbon. These homemade bookmarks make great gifts as well, and are a good size for a stocking stuffer. Most of the time the back of the card’s cover is white which makes it perfect to personalize with a special note. If it is not a blank back try gluing white paper or card stock cut the same size to the back. Then punch hole for ribbon and personalize. This is a good reason to save the ribbons on your presents and reuse them as well for the bookmarks. To make the bookmarks sturdier to better protect them from spills or little mouths that try to chew them, laminate the bookmarks with self adhesive laminate sheets found at most office supply stores. Trying making this gift for someone using their family holiday photo card. If you are giving the gift of a book add one of these personalized homemade bookmarks to the outside of the gift wrap. This is a project you can do year round with birthday and other special cards you receive. Recycling is great, but let’s not forget about the other R’s and reuse too! December 1 12/01/2009
Happy first day of December! I love when the first day of December arrives. Usually I start brainstorming about the holidays a couple of weeks before, starting to begin organizing (or at least trying to) all that needs to be done in the next couple of weeks. When December 1 hits for me it feels like the Holiday Season is officially here...hooray! Tomorrow for me will be an evening of baking to prepare for Thursday’s cookie exchange. I will show you some pictures when I make the cookies. This afternoon we are going to a family holiday dinner, and I need a dessert to bring along so I am going to make one batch of the cookies ahead of time for today since I already have the ingredients I need. It will save me one trip to the grocery store, and this time of year that is a great thing! I wanted to share some holiday ideas with you that I have come across in various places. On Paula Deen I saw a few center piece ideas which are great when you are on a budget. · For an inexpensive center piece fill glass vases you already own with peppermint candies in the center of the table. · Winter greens would also work nicely. · Fill bowls or large vases with ornaments · Wrap boxes in gift wrap and place in the center of your table · You could also do a combination of all of the above For gift wrapping try doing an eco friendly version: · Wrap your gifts in a dishcloth with a ribbon. I think this would be an especially great way to go for a hostess gift, or a gift that includes food. This idea I saw on MarthaStewart.com · Another idea is to wrap your gifts in a reusable bag with a bow. Lots of places sell reusable bags that fold into a small purse size pouches for easy storage. It is like 2 gifts in one! For information on how to make the perfect bow in 5 easy steps from Home Made Simple visit http://homemadesimple.com/en_CA/nbrcontent.do?contentType=ed&articleId=ar098 I hope one of these ideas will work for you, or at least get you brainstorming some ideas of your own J Do you have any center piece or gift wrapping ideas you would like to share? Reuse your Corks 11/24/2009
Cork Place Card HoldersOn Home Made Simple I saw a great idea that I would like to share. For a cute and budget friendly Place Card Holder use old wine corks or inexpensive ones purchased from your local craft store. Cut a slit in them horizontally and insert a card with your guests name on it. To add to this while brainstorming about the place card holder I came up with an additional idea if you have a little more time. You could print a photo of your guest and place it in the cork place card holder. The sillier the better! It would make for a great conversation starter. With the ease of sharing pictures now through social networking I am sure you could find some great photos of your guests to use. Click here to see the picture on HomeMadeSimple.com Two great places Home Made Simple suggests to put place card holders are on top of a folded napkin centered on the plate, or on the table centered above the place setting. This website is a new favorite find for me. I got another idea I may or may not use for my kid’s birthday party. Stay tuned! | Subscribe to
