I finally ate a giant homemade salad for a meal and it felt SO good!  Sometimes the things that I eat regularly get incredibly boring.  We don’t eat out very often.  With small children it is not always all that it is cracked up to be.  There are times I have dreamed about having a regular take-out night to look forward to but it just hasn’t been something we have implemented.

Throughout the packing, moving, and unpacking we did a lot of eating out, and purchased many pre-made meals.  You kind of go into survival mode during those times, and a lot of your routine goes out the window.  In a way it is a blessing because that change in routine gives you a renewed sense of appreciation for many ordinary areas of your life.

With all the eating out my spark for cooking and baking has been re-ignited.  It was a joy baking an apple pie with Pat, my mother-in-law.  It almost felt like the holidays, which got me excited about baking this season.  The beautiful pie smell that filled the air made our new home feel more like a home, and the kitchen a more special place.

What I learned from this is maybe more often when I feel burned out, or in a rut, I should purposely change things up, let routine go, and allow that spark to reignite.  Often I don’t veer off our usual path.  Sometimes it seems like it would be more of a hassle than it is worth.  I think I am wrong about that though.  There is nothing that makes you miss veggie packed meals like excluding them from your diet for a week or two.  Now veggies are what I crave the most.

The next time I am so tired of doing a certain task, maybe I should simply allow myself a guilt-free vacation from it so that I can come back renewed with more love and appreciation in place.

Do you ever allow yourself guilt-free vacations from certain tasks?  If so, does it help you?

I love this post, because it is something I need to think about. I can let go of my routine when I am actually on a vacation. But it is difficult for me to simply take a vacation from my routine while I am still at home in "stressed mode". But one thing to keep in mind is that everything is temporary, both the stressed mode and vacation mode! Hope you have a great day.

taking a vacation from a routine is a must. For a couple of reasons, one - it's fun, and two - when you go back you feel back on track. Routines are great but they are meant like rules, at time to time they should be broken!

Great post Wendy! I completely agree. When I am traveling I can't wait to get back into my routine that I take for granted so much!

Taking a break from routines are definitely a must every once in a while. But typically after a vacation I long for my routine again...and definitely long for fresh veggies.
