April 1 was the start of a 3 month no fast food junk challenge for our family.  To be completely honest we did have pizza out once since beginning our challenge on a hectic night.  Yikes, it is so hard to break the habit, but fortunately we are back on track!

When I wrote about the challenge I failed to mention one very significant part- soda.  My kids are young and don’t drink soda, but my husband and I do.  We decided as part of the challenge we would also take a 3 month hiatus from drinking any soda.  The crazy part about it is even though we are 27 days in and have been successful in not having one drop of soda so far, just writing the word makes me really want one.  That is how I know the strength of the addiction in my brain!

For years I have wanted to give up drinking soda.  There are reasons upon reasons to give it up, and it doesn’t matter if you are talking about regular soda or diet.  Either way you lose.  Sugar versus unhealthy chemicals, not to mention the sodium in both.

A few weeks ago I saw the damage that too much sodium causes to your arteries on the Dr. Oz show.   I took it as a sign that kicking the soda habit is a significant move in the right direction for me.  After a quick search I found out last year Dr. Oz did a 28 day Soda challenge on his show.  It was a reminder to me that it is never too late to turn things around, and the motivation I needed to keep pushing forward.

Removing soda cold turkey from our diet has been by far the hardest part of the challenge, much harder than removing fast food!  Even before starting the challenge we had already stopped buying soda regularly, but the fact is soda is so readily available you can pick some up virtually anywhere you go.  In general, I would say my motto is moderation, but for whatever reason soda doesn’t fit into the moderation box with me.  Having even one sip makes me crave more!  Even if I don’t give into the craving I know it is an unhealthy addiction and I don’t want to spend my life fighting soda cravings.  This is when it became apparent to me that cold turkey may be the only way for me to go.

At the end of 3 months I am going to have to think long and hard about whether or not I want soda to be a part of my life at all.  There are certain things I miss.  Our favorite cocktail is a Jack and Coke, but if having a little bit of soda in an occasional mixed drink means reliving this addictive battle over and over again I don’t know that it is worth it.

The first week of no soda was by far the hardest.  The second week was better but still difficult.  Now in the midst of the third week it is still a challenge but slowly improving.  Every time I go to the store and see a bottle of soda I really want one.  Even watching American Idol with those Coke cups makes me crave one badly.  That proves soda is an unhealthy addiction for me.

I’ll keep you posted on our progress, good or bad, but I am focusing on good! :)

Are any of you addicted to soda, even in moderation like I am?  Have you kicked the soda habit?  What helps you to successfully change a habit?

Congratulations on making it this far. Soda was never a problem for me but coffee was. I was able to give up all but two cups in the morning without too much struggle. I wish I had tips to share but unfortunately there are none. I hope you have a great day. Blessings...Mary

Hi Wendy! The longest I got without soda was I think 2 or 3 months and it felt like hell. I live in a tropical country and it's one of the most popular thirst quenchers here -- if not the most popular.

The last time I drank Coke was last Saturday. I'm planning to take a break again and since you mentioned it, I'm really determined to do so. I won't be drinking Coke (my favorite) for the next 30 days. It's summer here so this one will be kind of difficult.

Congratulations to your successful no fast food and soda challenge. It's been 27 days? How fleeting time is. :)

hello dear! omg, I was addicted to diet soda for the longest time. YOU CAN DO THIS! You have the ability to control what you put into your body! Be Strong!

I can't believe how different I feel now. I used to drink a 12 oz can mid morning class or at breakfast, one at lunch, a 16 oz bottle for afternoon/evening classes, and probably another around dinner or worse if we went out drinking that night. I was crazy! I continued the habits while I was teaching, then into grad school I slowed down but would have one for afternoon classes at least...

I think it was gradual for me, though I started by just saying I will NOT keep soda in the house. If I really want one now, I buy a single bottle instead of a case (knowing its more money). I think it was grad school too- we learned about how coke and pepsi advertise to kids, vending machines, and providing schools with incentives to push their soda. It is really sick, and to think that I support that by buying it for myself just bothered me.

I also would wake up with the WORST stomach pains. There are studies indicating it (diet and reg) aids in weight gain, unhealthy eating patterns, the school issues, it has no nutritional value, its costing money, and now its making my stomach hurt!

Anyway, I have one maybe once a month (?) now on average, if that. I notice how much it affects my stomach and digestion now though so it almost kills the craving! It is conquerable! :)

@Laural,

Thank you so much for the encouragement and advice! You are right- it does make your body feel awful. The stuff is so addictive it's incredible. Much harder to quit than most things, which definitely makes me wonder why?
I hope you start to feel better soon. It is no fun being sick. I find of all the things I try to do to make myself feel better when I am sick, nothing works as well as rest. I hope you have a great day!

Take heart, it will get easier!! Years ago I loved soda. I would so look forward to that next cola...but not anymore. It didn't happen overnight, but now I am at the point where I could care less about it. I drink lots of water and when I want flavor I drink unsweetened iced tea. Good luck to you!!
