Not all that long ago I witnessed the aftermath of a car accident. The accident happened just outside of my home, the road where I pull out of my complex. Two women were involved. One car hit the rear of the car in front of it. The car that was hit was a very nice SUV that looked pretty new, while the other car looked older with a few more years of use.
The woman who hit the car in front of her appeared very distraught and stressed. Who wouldn’t be? Hitting another car is not something you want to happen. Millions of thoughts were probably running through her head. Fortunately neither woman was hurt.
It was the reaction of the woman in the nice, new car that really impacted me. I did not know what to expect. Being hit can be very upsetting. She got out of her car, and looked at the large dent. She then proceeded to walk up to the woman who hit her, who was already out of her car. I saw them exchange words for a moment.
The compassion in the woman’s eyes for the lady who hit her was striking. A look I won’t forget. She reached out and gave the distraught woman who hit her a big long hug. I couldn’t believe it! I was left completely amazed at this gesture I had just witnessed. It immediately impacted me to my core. What a truly loving reaction to an unfavorable circumstance.
Not being the hugest lover of driving, I know how stressful it can be, especially in busy areas. Not to mention the road rage that most of us experience and witness at one time or another.
The look of immediate relief on the woman’s face after the hug was astounding. It appeared as though 100 pounds had been lifted off her shoulders. I imagine that when first getting out of her car one thing running through her mind was probably that she was worried how this person would react to the damage of their car.
Somehow or another, the person hit turned the situation completely around. It impressed me so much that I know it will always stick with me. So much of happiness is how we react to life’s circumstances. When something happens that may not be favorable, just think, you have the ability to react and make it into a positive or negative situation. Even a car accident! Her reaction is exactly the one I aspire to have in the same situation.
It is interesting the more you become aware of drawing happiness and positivity into your life, the more you witness the very same thing. You open yourself up, and the good starts to flood in. You get to decide what you fill your mind with; positive thoughts attract more of the same. I don’t believe that witnessing this act of love was any accident. There was a lesson in there for me, and I am grateful for it.
As a work in progress, I aspire to have positive reactions even to difficult circumstances, just like the example I saw.
Have you ever experienced or witnessed a positive reaction to a difficult circumstance you would like to share?
