Big Brother and Little Sister share a room together. Big Brother wakes up before Little Sister and quietly (usually) leaves the room while Little Sister continues sleeping.
This morning Big Brother and I were downstairs having breakfast when we heard the loud shouts from the newly awoken Mommy mini-me.
“Brother, Make. Your. Bed!”
To which he responded “Don’t tell me! I already know!”
hehehe...that was my morning chuckle. Hey, at least I didn’t have to say it! ;-)
Onto the Extra Brown Chocolate Chip Cookies...
A few days ago I was bitten by the baking bug, which some of you may have already seen on Facebook. Sometimes baking is just what you need. It can be calming and you can both lose yourself in it and stay present because of the precise measurements that are usually involved.
This was a spur of the moment bite from the baking bug that occurred so I decided I would go with Chocolate Chip Cookies simply because I regularly have all the ingredients I need for that in the house without pre-planning. They sell gigantic bags of chocolate chips at Costco, which of course we buy because you just never know when you could use a few of those!
Anyway, I did not check to see if I actually had what I needed to make said cookies ahead of time, and as luck would have it while baking I realized I was short on a few things. Flour and granulated sugar to name a few. After a quick back and forth between my husband and I (he also really wanted the cookies) I quickly came to the conclusion that neither one of us was actually willing to go to the store to get the ingredients I needed, nor the laundry detergent we also ran out of. Soooooo I improvised and Extra Brown Chocolate Chip Cookies were born! The laundry is still sitting in the washing machine unwashed. J
I replaced half of the white flour that was missing with whole wheat flour, as well as part of the granulated sugar with more brown sugar.
The recipe:
Extra Brown Chocolate Chip Cookies – an accidental adaptation from Hershey’s Perfect Chocolate Chip Cookies
1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1 cup whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup butter, softened
½ cup granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
Directions:
Pre-heat oven to 350 F
Sift together flour, baking soda, and salt (I use a whisk).
In a separate bowl cream butter, sugars, and vanilla.
Add eggs one at a time beating well.
Slowly pour in flour and mix well.
Stir in chocolate chips.
Drop by gigantic spoonfuls (or whatever size you like) onto a cookie sheet.
Bake about 13 minutes until golden brown around the edges.
*Special note – our cookies are on the slightly LARGER size so it takes longer to bake than the traditional 8 to 10 minutes so you may need to bake accordingly
The verdict of this little unplanned baking experiment...
They tasted great! Big Brother who is very, did I say VERY, vocal about is likes and dislikes with our cooking didn’t even notice they were different, SCORE!
Hubby and I noticed a tad whole wheat flavor, but it still was pretty darn good, much better than this time! Not bad for being a lazy bones and not going out to the store. Do people still go to their neighbour’s house for this kind of stuff, or is that a thing of the past?
The next time you are out of some essential ingredients try changing things up, you never know what you might get!
*Disclaimer – I’m not promising good results!
