Recently I have read many quotes about happiness, what it means to be happy, how you find happiness. Is it something you can find, or is it a choice? There are many quotes, which ultimately means many different way of looking at the same thing.
People take different roads seeking fulfillment and happiness. Just because they're not on your road doesn't mean they've gotten lost. ~H. Jackson Browne
For me happiness simply comes down to spending more time focusing on things that bring me joy, and less time focusing on things that don’t. The more time I devote to the little moments that bring me joy, the happier and more peaceful I am.
Things absolutely can upset and frustrate me. Switching my focus over to what makes me happy helps me to move on from any negative feeling much faster, making me a happier person, and in turn gives me more patience in the moments I need it most. Experiencing all our emotions is a part of living life to the fullest, but focusing on the good makes your life more fulfilling.
There are a lot of people struggling right now, especially in our economy. One tip to help you through your day if you are struggling no matter what the cause, whether is because you lost your job, or a loved one. Post a piece of paper up in a spot you look at often, for instance your fridge. Everyday write down at least one positive thing. The harder things are, the more simple it may start out. I am happy for one deep breath of calm.
The reason I like this idea is because it is a good way to shift your focus, even if it is only for the moment you think of and write something down. It is a start, and the beginning of a least one moment of happiness for that day. The next day it may lead to 2 moments of happiness, one being the reflection of the previous day’s positive note.
Do this for as long as it helps you. You don’t have to be struggling; maybe it is just one tough day. Use that as a good excuse to bring that piece of paper back out. In deep despair this may sound trivial, but try using it as a tool to get through one moment at a time.
Every now and then,
when the world sits just right,
a gentle breath of heaven
fills my soul with delight...
~Hazelmarie ‘Mattie’ Elliott, A Breath of Heaven
Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things. ~Robert Brault, www.robertbrault.com
